Empty Boots

Ancient trees of the great forest whisper of the long lost dead, of the war that piled bodies as high as them. They whistle with the wind in anticipation of the ghosts that wander through their home. Only one hint that the army had existed at all was the pair of empty leather boots sitting on the forest floor. Rain or shine, snow or heated madness, the boots always had a place of remembrance at the feet of the great forest.

Many don’t know about the soldiers that died with only the trees to witness their deaths, and many wouldn’t want to know. How they suffered as they lay dying, their last breaths given to the forest as a tribute for the looking after their graves. They were mostly boys and young men, how foolish they must have been when they signed their lives away for the chance of adventure. Trees of the great forest whisper about that time still, they mourned for them you see, the trees. How they wept! For the soldiers that had died for a failing cause, the uprising! Turn of the century, the war to end all others, all for naught. They never got to see the terrible things their people suffered because of their deaths, and they’d be glad for it, as death is far easier than pain.

No one knows of the empty boots that call the forest home, no one knows because the army was a secret gone missing, falling short of their beloveds ears. Their spilled blood was meaningless, except for the lesson they provide. Dead boots that have no life to look after them still stand in the forest, as if waiting for their carer to come back to shine them.

Lessons are tragedies that had a negative outcome, something that you could learn from if you choose to accept the reality. This reality is death, and death has an uncanny way of pulling you towards them as if you had a summoning string.

One single pair of boots that still sit beneath the tree’s canopy belonged to a boy at the age of seventeen. He had a family once, but they too died for the failed revolution.

Autumn leaves fall and sinks into the ground every year, the same fate of the other soldiers. But not the boots, the boots stay there like a tombstone, standing guard for its fellow soldiers now fallen in battle. The ghosts that wander the forest are never lost, they have the choice of leaving, but they never do. They stand watch of the trees of the great forest that kept watch over them.
