School Quad

Some people believe that human kind is evil by nature, that the good people have to choose to be good everyday, but what defines it? Is it the little white lie that is told to spare someone extra pain? Nothing is that apparent, but everything can be observed by simply watching people, and so sitting in the quad, the little patch of green grass in the middle of the school, people sit and watch. Now this isn’t staring, this is older and younger persons sitting down with a book or a phone, glinting glasses on and only occasionally looking up to watch the younger ones throwing a bright red ball, the reflective surface blinding if thrown too high into the sun. Stretching against the twilight, the skyline of NYC stands boldly in stark silhouette. Much like a tree canopy, each skyscraper fought for a glimmer of sunlight, of which only grazed the tops of proud, posing buildings. The jungle of concrete and glass soaking up attention from the ants who made their way through the mazes with the soul purpose of getting home for the evening. Below the fading sun, various beings go about their business, Night-lifers dressed in bright colours shout to one another across streets, and taxi drivers slam their breaks and yell at a group of teenagers to get off the road. Rushed people walk past the homeless man without a glance, as if used to the sight of scraggly beards and sullen faces. Occasionally, one breaks away from the masses to give the man a few coins and a sandwich, a warm smile and they’re off, whisked away by the forever flowing current of the river called NYC.
